The New Eves – Red Brick

Brighton’s The New Eves return with their first new music since the release of their debut album, “The New Eve Is Rising”, a double A-side that captures the band at their most spontaneous.

“Red Brick” came together at the tail end of the album sessions at Rockfield Studios. After nine days of recording, the four-piece were still wired. They jammed out the intro, then shelved it until vocalist Violet finished a poem about their trip to New York and started reciting it over the music. Nina takes her first crack at lead guitar here, while Violet runs wild with her words. The song builds slowly with scything lyrics and frantic drums before hitting that signature New Eves howl.

“Whale Station” started as a jam in rural Sweden last summer. Ella read from a book called “Whale Nation” with such intensity that they were all out of breath afterwards. The track sat dormant for nearly a year before they decided to record it as the B-side. When they couldn’t clear the book’s text, the band went into research mode and rewrote the lyrics. Producer Marta helped them follow their instincts in the studio, recording most of it live with no fixed structure. The result is winding, stream-of-consciousness poetry set to improvised instrumentation.

Both tracks were created entirely by women, from songwriting and performance through to mixing and mastering. Transgressive called them back into the studio just a week after the album dropped. It felt rushed at the time, but it matched the energy of how “Red Brick” was initially written.
